This untitled piece was created by Chaïbia Talal, a Moroccan painter who was born in 1929. Though she had no formal training, her works gained international recognition. Chaïbia’s art emerged in a post-colonial Morocco, as the nation grappled with questions of cultural identity and expression. As a woman from a rural background in a traditionally patriarchal society, her art offered an alternative narrative. She once said, “I paint what I feel, what I see.” Here, bright colors and bold lines create an almost dreamlike scene, filled with figures and shapes that seem to dance across the canvas. Are they faces, spirits, or simply figments of the artist’s imagination? Chaïbia’s work challenges traditional representations. She gives us a glimpse into her unique perspective, shaped by her identity and experiences as a Moroccan woman. Her paintings are a testament to the power of art as a form of personal and cultural expression.
