Hendrick Hulsbergh created this print of "Gezicht op het landgoed Bradgate in Leichestershire" with etching. It presents the estate of the Earl of Stamford, and the estate itself signifies much about the hierarchies of 18th-century England. Made in the first decades of the 1700s, the image uses an elevated viewpoint to survey the vast, carefully arranged landscape. The country house sits in the center of manicured gardens. The viewer is reminded of the power of the aristocracy, their control over land and labor visualized through the ordered composition. The print itself functions within a culture industry keen to display and circulate images of wealth and status. To understand this image more fully, we can look to estate records, social histories, and the biographies of those who lived and worked on such properties. It’s through this research that we can begin to interpret the role of art as a reflection of its time.
