Editor: This print, "Theatrum Anatomicum in Leiden, Seen from the Interior," was made in 1712. I understand it’s an engraving, and what strikes me is the contrast between the human figures and the rather clinical, almost detached, scientific observation of anatomy. What’s your perspective on this? Curator: I see this image as deeply intertwined with shifting societal attitudes towards the body, knowledge, and power. The anatomical theater itself became a spectacle. Bodies – often those of marginalized individuals – were displayed for dissection. Editor: Marginalized how? Curator: Consider that those bodies may be unclaimed, or come from executed criminals, further marginalizing already vulnerable populations in the name of scientific progress. The gaze, inscribed in the architectural space, is inherently political. Note how those in attendance are dressed – are they wealthy? How might access to such institutions enforce societal hierarchies of class and status? Editor: So, it’s not just about science but who gets to access and interpret that science? Curator: Precisely. Who gets to look, who is looked *at*, and what power dynamics are embedded in that act. The image makes you consider what power structures enabled anatomical studies at the time, and whose bodies were sacrificed for this advancement. Editor: It’s a lot to think about…It sounds like this image serves as a stark reminder of ethical responsibilities that still exist in scientific pursuits today. Curator: Indeed, these images compel us to grapple with persistent inequities shaping who has access to knowledge and who bears the burden of its pursuit.
