Here we see a postcard of a painting of Saint Liduina of Schiedam by Hrs. Rebers. The image is a composite of five scenes, each framed by an arch, resembling a medieval altarpiece. Notice how the artist uses the divisions to narrate different moments in Liduina's life, each panel a study in contrast and composition. The central scene, dominated by the horizontal figure of Liduina on her sickbed, is flanked by scenes of giving, of earthly and spiritual comfort, all rendered in a style that evokes both reverence and the everyday. The interplay of light and shadow, particularly in the folds of the garments and the faces of the figures, adds a sculptural quality to the image. These aren't just flat representations; they have depth, texture, a sense of being present. Rebers, through this arrangement, invites us to contemplate the structure of sainthood, the architecture of belief, and the very framework of human compassion.
