Curatorial notes
Fra Angelico painted this panel depicting "The Apostle St. James the Great Freeing the Magician Hermogenes" in tempera on wood. The foreground presents a formal arrangement of figures against a structured architectural backdrop, offset by the chaos of demons lurking in the left corner. Consider the use of colour, where the vivid reds and blues of the robes create a striking contrast against the muted tones of the architecture. James extending a rod towards Hermogenes creates a semiotic moment of conversion. This composition can be viewed as a structural allegory, contrasting order and disorder, faith and heresy. The painting does more than just illustrate a religious narrative. Instead, the formal composition and the careful arrangement of elements, offer a sophisticated visual discourse on power, belief, and transformation.
