This is a photo of a girl in traditional Volendam clothing, sitting by a ditch, by an artist called G. Hidderley. The sepia tones give it such a soft, dreamy feel. It's all about capturing a moment, an impression. You can sense Hidderley working intuitively here. Look at the way the grass is rendered; it’s almost like abstract marks that just happen to create a field. The light seems to dance on the surface, and there's a real physicality to how the image is made. I love the small, dark, almost smudged area on the far bank, just behind the girl, it looks like someone bending over, a ghostly figure. The texture is so rich; it’s like a tactile memory of the place, a little like Corot’s landscapes. This image reminds us that art isn’t about perfection or fixed ideas. It's about the process, the exchange, the feeling.
