Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made this painting with oil, of course, and a bit of mischief, as he has taken the liberty of being a bit rude with his colours. Imagine Kirchner, trying to capture the hustle of the city. I can picture him, standing there with his brushes, trying to keep up with all of the figures moving to and fro. The paint looks thin and scratchy, like he’s attacking the surface with a vengeance. There’s a strange mood about this piece, like you are watching the people from a distance. The odd pinks and blues create a sense of drama. He is using colour to push the boundaries of representation. Kirchner's use of jagged lines and clashing colors is reminiscent of other expressionists like Munch, who were all trying to capture the anxiety of modern life. You can see this angst in the faces of the figures and in the overall chaotic composition. But isn't this what painting is all about? Continuing a conversation, sparking new ideas, and inspiring each other to see the world in new and exciting ways.
