This is a stereo card photograph, showing the Leidseplein with the Stadsschouwburg and the Koepelkerk in Amsterdam. It's interesting how this image captures a place, but also a moment. The light is diffuse, kind of hazy. Look at how the buildings are rendered, sharp in places, but softening out around the edges. I think the artist is trying to show something about the way we see, our vision itself. A memory, perhaps. There's so much detail, like the tiny figures populating the square, or the intricate facades of the buildings, that you could lose yourself for hours in it. It reminds me a little of Atget's photography - or maybe even some of the early impressionist painters. It is a meditation on time, memory, and the fleeting nature of experience. It’s not trying to give you all the answers. It's more of an invitation to participate in the ongoing conversation that is art.
