Alfred Freddy Krupa made this ink drawing, Three passengers and two birds, on paper in 2024. What strikes me first is the artist’s mark-making. He’s found a way to be incredibly precise, yet also loose and free. It’s like he's captured a fleeting moment. The paper has a beautiful texture, and you can see how the ink bleeds slightly into it, creating these soft, blurry edges. The grey wash in the background is built up in layers, almost like watercolor. There's something so direct about the strokes. Look at the squiggly lines that make up the trees. Each one feels deliberate, full of energy, and so playful. There's such a sense of movement in the work, I almost feel like I'm being whisked away by the wind. Krupa’s approach to art making reminds me of Brice Marden's calligraphic paintings. They share a similar interest in the expressive potential of lines and the beauty of simplicity. Art isn't about answers, it's more about creating a space for asking questions.
