Curatorial notes
Sybrand Altmann created this portrait of a boy using graphite and chalk, during a time when the Dutch art world was deeply engaged in realism and romanticism. This artwork exists in a society undergoing significant shifts in understanding childhood. The boy's delicate features and soft rendering stand in contrast to the rigid social expectations placed on young males. The unfinished quality of the sketch invites us to consider identity as a process, not a fixed state. How might this work be seen as a moment of vulnerability and innocence, set against the backdrop of emerging class structures and gender norms? This piece serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in portraying identity, especially during formative years. The boy's gaze almost seems to ask, "Who am I becoming?".
