Leo Putz made "Im Sonnenlicht," sometime around the turn of the century, with oil on canvas. The brushwork is so gentle, just like sunlight kissing your skin. Look at how he's captured the stillness of the moment – the woman in her fancy hat, pausing by the lake or the sea. Her gaze is so direct. I feel like she sees right through me. I wonder what he was thinking as he painted her, layer upon layer, trying to capture the subtle shift of light on the water, the texture of her dress. I love the way the color almost glows. It reminds me a little bit of Vuillard. Painters are always in conversation with each other. Maybe Putz was looking at Vuillard, or maybe they were both looking at the same light. Either way, it is a beautiful moment captured with paint.
