Hans Andersen Brendekilde painted “Bondehus med eng blomster” with oils, and you can almost feel him layering those strokes, one over the other, building up the texture of that incredible meadow. I can imagine him there, squinting in the light, trying to capture that fleeting moment when the colors just pop. What was he thinking about as he laid down those strokes? Was he chasing a feeling, a memory? There’s a real density to it; it's like the paint itself is alive, vibrating with all that color. The colors feel true to life, if a little sombre, and the light is used with such expert control! I am just so moved by those luscious colors, and the way the flowers reach up to you. It's like a conversation between Brendekilde and us, about how we see, feel, and remember our connection to nature. He shows us how painting, when it's really working, can open up a whole world.
