Editor: This is “Lot dronken gevoerd door zijn dochters,” an engraving made by Christoffel van Sichem the Second, around 1645-1646. The work, at the Rijksmuseum, feels claustrophobic with all the busyness of the line work and figures. What stands out to you compositionally? Curator: I notice how Sichem employs the lines. Note the dramatic contrasts in light and shadow that define the figures. The lines are thick and close together to describe volume in the figures' bodies, but it’s looser in the surrounding foliage. Consider the formal arrangement, how the daughters flank their father, creating a structured, almost architectural composition. Do you see how that balance contrasts the tumultuous scene itself? Editor: That's interesting, I see it now. It’s almost like the artist wanted to create some harmony within the narrative. What does the density of the line work accomplish formally? Curator: The close lines do a few things, notice how it creates depth. Sichem directs your eyes to the foreground by virtue of the heavier blacks, leaving you to decode the tonal values in the background to build out space. Where the eye rests says so much about where to look. I’d argue it enhances the intensity of the figures. What about that dynamic interests you? Editor: The figures draw attention to each other through their central, interlocked arrangement, enhanced by the heavy contrast, further enhancing the incestuous undertones within the depicted story. What I’ve learned today changed how I read art, thank you. Curator: My pleasure. Looking closely at the relationship between visual elements—line, contrast, balance—provides rich insight to experience art.
