Thomas Hardwick created this study of classical ornament and detail with graphite on paper. Hardwick’s drawing is an exploration of form and texture, as he carefully renders the textures of different materials like metal, feathers and scales. What is immediately striking about the image, is that the artist is drawing on ancient forms, while also participating in the contemporary revival of classical design. The weight of history is inherent in the subject matter: Roman arms, armor and mythological creatures, carefully composed to fill a lunette-shaped space. Hardwick has demonstrated the skill required to make ancient forms his own. This drawing is also interesting when considered as part of Hardwick's broader work as an architect. It gives us insight into his design process, showing how he considered decorative elements in his buildings. This piece challenges our contemporary separation of art, craft, and design, where a single drawing can be both a study and a finished artwork in itself.
