This sheet with a pattern of triangles was made by an anonymous artist, and it now resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As an art historian, I’m drawn to what this kind of patterned textile can tell us about the culture that produced it. The repeating geometric design speaks to a highly developed aesthetic sense, but what were its social functions? Was it intended for clothing, domestic decoration, or perhaps even trade? The anonymity of the artist is also telling. It suggests a context where individual artistic expression was less important than adherence to established patterns and techniques. Without knowing the precise time and place of its origin, we can only speculate. But by researching similar textiles, their uses and the social structures surrounding their production, we can begin to understand its place in the world. The meaning of art lies not only in the object itself, but in the rich tapestry of social and institutional forces that shaped its creation.
