This design for a window in the Amsterdam Lyceum by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst uses simplified forms and a muted palette to evoke a sense of solemnity and contemplation. You know, it's funny how an artist can create a whole world with just a few colours! The texture of the drawing is interesting – you can see the grain of the paper coming through the layers of chalk and crayon. Look closely at the figure's face – those hatched lines creating the beard and the soft shading around the eyes. See how the geometry and modelling somehow meet in the middle. The colour palette is really striking, and unusual too, with dark blues, yellows and purples used to create a harmonious and balanced whole. Looking at this, I'm reminded of the work of early modernist stained-glass artists. Their ability to create monumental and emotionally resonant works of art from simple materials continues to inspire me, it's about exploring the relationship between form, colour, and emotion and seeing where it takes you.
