Richard Tepe made this photograph, "Stilleven met kan en potten", with an emphasis on everyday objects. Tepe’s work exists within a broader historical context, a moment in which photography was still finding its place as an art form, separate from painting. Tepe, who lived from 1864 to 1952, carefully arranged these jars, pots, and pitchers, playing with light and shadow to create a composition that feels both familiar and deeply personal. These still life images were a way for artists to explore themes of domesticity and the everyday lives of women, often confined to the home. The muted tones and careful arrangement evoke a sense of quiet contemplation. This work invites us to consider the value we place on the objects that surround us, and how they reflect our identities and histories.
