This medal, commemorating Charles V’s victories in Italy, presents us with potent symbols of power and dominion. On one side, the Emperor’s profile, encircled by his name, reminds us of the cult of personality so vital to rulers. But it’s the reverse that truly captures our attention. Here, two columns rise, evoking the Pillars of Hercules, ancient symbols marking the edge of the known world. Charles V adopted them as his personal emblem, entwining them with a banner that boldly proclaims "Plus Ultra"—further beyond. This motto, so central to his identity, resonates deeply with humanity’s eternal desire to push boundaries. Interestingly, the columns have reappeared throughout history, adorning Spanish currency and flags, each time carrying echoes of imperial ambition. The resonance of such symbols speaks to our collective memory, subconsciously imbuing the image with a sense of grandeur. They remind us of a world where power was both asserted and challenged, and their reappearance in various forms suggests the cyclical, never-ending nature of history's grand narratives.
