Bartholomeus Breenbergh created this print, "Ruïnes van de tempel van de Zon en de Maan bij het Colosseum" sometime between 1618 and 1657. Breenbergh, positioned as a Northern European artist, renders his interpretation of the classic Italian landscape in a way that invites a dialogue between the grandeur of ancient ruins and the everyday lives of its inhabitants. Notice the figures in the foreground; their presence subtly challenges the dominant narratives of classical glory. They are not the heroes of the past, but rather ordinary people inhabiting a landscape marked by history. The crumbled architecture of the Temple juxtaposed against the figures evokes questions of time, memory, and identity. What does it mean to live among the ruins of a once-great civilization? What stories do these stones tell about power, decay, and resilience? Breenbergh encourages us to reflect on our relationship to the past, and to consider the layers of history that shape our present. It prompts a consideration of whose stories are told and whose are left out of the grand narratives of history.
