Editor: This print, "Gezicht op het Kurhaus te Bentheim," made sometime between 1895 and 1903 by H.H. Wittkamp, is really intriguing. I’m struck by the symmetry of the building and how the trees frame it. How would you interpret this work, focusing on its formal elements? Curator: The initial draw to this pictorial photograph is undoubtedly its strong horizontal emphasis created by the long façade of the Kurhaus and further accentuated by the manicured lawn. What's interesting, though, is how that horizontality is disrupted. Notice how Wittkamp positions the architectural mass slightly off-center, creating a tension between balance and asymmetry. What impact does that off-kilter feeling have on your reading of the image? Editor: I see what you mean! It makes the composition less static and gives it more depth, as my eye is drawn beyond the symmetry of the facade. It does create more dynamism and perhaps intrigue? It definitely adds interest to what could have been an ordinary photograph of a building. Curator: Precisely. Furthermore, consider the interplay between light and shadow across the surface. The soft, diffused light, characteristic of pictorialism, flattens the image to some extent. However, observe how Wittkamp subtly uses tonal variations to articulate the architectural form, paying close attention to the way shadows define the columns. It highlights the formal features as opposed to specific details. It seems he invites the viewer to examine the image on the structural level before considering subject matter. Editor: It’s like he’s prioritizing form and structure. The blurring and monochrome are stylistic choices that underscore its constructed nature. He controls our perspective and limits any strong narrative that the photo would elicit. I've gained a deeper understanding. Thank you. Curator: And I you. Recognizing the photograph's emphasis on structure elevates the viewer's perspective of both the technique of photography, and the structure itself.
