Adam Elsheimer created "Il Contento" using oil paint on copper, a common material for smaller, detailed paintings during the early 17th century. Copper gave Elsheimer the means to achieve a luminous and polished surface, allowing for the rich colors and fine details that define the scene of revelry and celebration. The smooth, non-absorbent surface of copper enabled Elsheimer to build up layers of translucent glazes, creating a depth of color and atmospheric effect that would have been difficult to achieve on canvas. The choice of this material is deeply rooted in the period's artistic practices, and Elsheimer's engagement with the copper medium reflects the importance of materiality, making, and context in understanding the artwork, challenging the traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
