This fashion plate, Art- Goût- Beauté, was made in January 1924, and probably with ink and gouache. You can almost smell the perfume in the air. The palette is muted and tasteful, a blend of soft pinks, greens, and browns. The anonymous artist isn't trying to trick you with any kind of realism. Instead, this feels like an illustration from a dream. What I mean is, there’s an emphasis on surface and pattern. The whole image is built from simple graphic shapes and flat color. I love the orchestra in the background, look at the way they are a series of angular black shapes, a pure graphic element. It reminds me a bit of Léger, or maybe Stuart Davis. Ultimately this piece speaks to art being a dialogue across time, a conversation through images. And that's a beautiful thing.
