This print, "Zittende vrouw en man," was made by an anonymous artist through the process of engraving. The dense, swirling composition of figures and foliage is entirely dependent on the crisp lines incised into the metal plate, from which the print was pulled. Notice how the varying thickness and proximity of the lines create a sense of depth and shadow, modeling the forms of the figures and suggesting the texture of the leaves. The design closely mimics the look of a carved frieze. Prints like this played a crucial role in disseminating visual ideas widely, before photography was available. Its anonymous maker was likely a skilled artisan, attuned to the market demand for decorative motifs. By blurring the line between fine art and reproductive craft, the print gives us insight into the visual culture of its time.
