Curatorial notes
This photograph by Eugène Hanau, shows a bride in bed, her groom kneeling beside her. It’s a stereo card from the series ‘La Vie Parisienne,’ offering a glimpse into intimate moments, or perhaps, staged representations of them. The image evokes questions about the social norms and expectations surrounding marriage in late 19th-century France. How much autonomy did women have in choosing their partners, and what were the societal pressures they faced? These cards were produced and collected in a historical context where the rise of photography intersected with a voyeuristic fascination for depictions of private life. Researchers interested in the history of photography, gender studies, and French social history could find this image a valuable resource. Through close examination and contextual research, we can better understand the complex interplay between art, society, and individual experience.
