Curator: Feininger's "Untitled" drawing is a study in simple forms, all charcoal on paper. I’m immediately struck by the figure's isolation. Editor: Yes, the way the person is perched there...it's almost as if they're teetering on the edge of something. The roughness of the charcoal also speaks to the everyday labor and materials accessible to artists at the time. Curator: And the ambiguity too. We don't know where this person is or what they are doing. It's more about capturing a feeling, a mood. He could be anyone, anywhere, really. Editor: I wonder what kind of paper Feininger used. Its texture probably influenced the way the charcoal adhered. The material constraints are so interesting! Curator: For me, it's about the emotion Feininger evokes with so little. It’s a very personal response to form and feeling. Editor: A wonderful reminder that art exists within and because of its material reality.
