Editor: This is a Drachm from the Koinon of Epeiros, housed at the Harvard Art Museums. It looks pretty worn, but I can still make out a head and a bird! What stands out to you about this piece? Curator: The die-cut and striking methods used to produce this drachm emphasize the material's malleability. Note how the high relief portrait on one side contrasts with the incuse design of the bird on the other. Editor: So, the coin’s creation itself is significant? Curator: Precisely. The interplay of positive and negative space, the raised and sunken elements, reveals the inherent properties of the metal under pressure, thus creating an interesting tactile quality. Editor: Fascinating! I didn't consider how the process shaped its artistic value. Curator: Indeed. By examining its formal qualities, we gain a deeper appreciation for the artistic intent behind its creation.
