Pieter van der Borcht created this print of a portal with two doors sometime between 1560 and 1608 using etching. During this time the Netherlands was experiencing significant cultural and political change that affected the production of art. This drawing gives us insight into 16th century aesthetics. The architectural elements, such as the columns, busts, and ornamentation on the doors are indicative of the prevailing styles of the era. As you look at the image you may consider its symbolism. Doors often represent transitions, choices, and the passage from one space or state to another. What does it mean to have two doors? Do they signal different paths? Are they for different people? What emotional responses do they trigger for you? The artwork reflects the societal values and artistic conventions of the time, while also providing a space to contemplate the deeper meanings embedded within the image of a doorway.
