Serge Brignoni made this print, "Im Atelier", with a flurry of marks that remind us artmaking is a process full of stops and starts. The left and right sides have different dominant colours which give the piece an off-kilter feeling. On the left we have deep red, and on the right a cool blue. I love the way Brignoni has scratched, smeared, and layered marks on top of one another. I see some shapes which are very precise, others which are much more loose, and free. It feels like the whole image is in conversation. Take a look at the way a series of circles move through the right side of the image, it’s as if they are chasing each other. Brignoni's approach reminds me of Picasso, who made so many works in the Cubist style. Like Picasso, Brignoni seems fascinated by how we make sense of the world through art. Instead of fixing a single meaning, his art celebrates the joy of exploration.
