Philip Zilcken etched "Landschap met huizen, lantaarns en wagen" - that's "Landscape with houses, lanterns, and wagon" - sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Look at the way Zilcken uses these fine, scratchy lines to suggest form and atmosphere. It’s not about capturing every detail, but more about giving you a feeling, a memory of a place. The wagon wheels leave tracks which seem to dissolve into the surface of the plate, like a memory fading. Think about the way the light seems to be coming from everywhere and nowhere all at once. It makes the scene feel dreamlike, almost as if it exists outside of time. You can sense the influence of Whistler in the atmospheric and evocative qualities of this print, but Zilcken brings his own sensibility to the fore. His landscapes invite you to wander and get lost.
