Otto Mueller created "Three Female Nudes in the Forest" using distemper on canvas, a medium allowing for matte, almost fresco-like surfaces. Mueller belonged to Die Brücke, an early 20th-century Expressionist group in Germany. The group sought to find authentic modes of expression. These artists were influenced by a desire to return to a more natural state, away from the industrialized world. "Tree Female Nudes in the Forest" represents a key theme for the collective, but Mueller’s work has a melancholic quality to it. These female figures are rendered with simplified forms and earthy tones, blending into the sylvan surroundings. His work can be seen as a counterpoint to traditional, often objectified, representations of women in art. Here, the women are part of the landscape, presented as beings connected to the natural world, rather than objects of a male gaze. The figures' emotional and psychological states remain ambiguous. These women remind us of the early 20th century’s yearning for a simpler, more genuine existence.
