Theodore Roszak made this sculpture, "Insect Plant", out of metal, and its open structure is so intriguing. It seems like the process was one of building up, maybe even improvising, letting the metal take on this strange, almost organic form. I’m drawn to the way the metal is worked here. The rough texture, that greenish-brown patina, and then these delicate, spindly elements clustered at the top. Look closely and you can see how the light catches on different parts, creating shadows and highlights that give it a real sense of depth and movement. The plant-like forms have this skeletal vibe that’s weirdly beautiful. It reminds me a little of David Smith’s work, how he used industrial materials to create these almost abstract, poetic forms. It's like Roszak is showing us the hidden life of plants, their insect inhabitants, all while embracing the beauty of decay and transformation. Art is such an ongoing conversation, isn't it?
