Curatorial notes

François Courboin created this artwork titled 'Vrouw leunt achterover met een schedel in haar hand', an etching, sometime before his death in 1926. At first glance, the delicate lines and the subtle play of light and shadow capture a scene steeped in symbolism. Courboin uses etching to create a textured surface where the form emerges from a network of fine lines. Notice how the cross-hatching builds depth, defining the contours of the woman’s figure and the folds of her dress. Her contemplative pose, leaning back with a skull in hand, evokes a sense of mortality. This pose destabilizes conventional portraiture, blurring the lines between beauty and decay. The contrasting elements—the ephemeral beauty of flowers and the stark reality of the skull—function as signs within a complex semiotic system. Courboin invites us to question fixed meanings. The very act of viewing becomes an interpretation, shaped by our own understanding of cultural codes.
