LeRoy Neiman made this painting, Hunt Rendezvois, with a vibrant energy, using strokes that almost vibrate on the canvas. The way he layers blues and greens feels intuitive, like he's chasing a feeling more than depicting a scene. Looking closely, you can see how the paint application varies. Some areas are dense and opaque, like the thick dashes that define the horses, while others are more transparent, allowing the canvas to peek through. The texture is alive; you can practically feel the movement of the brush. There's a spot near the bottom with these chaotic marks that, to me, looks like a dog, but they could also be something else entirely. The beauty of this painting lies in its ambiguity. Neiman’s work reminds me a little of Joan Mitchell, another artist who wasn't afraid to embrace the messiness of paint. Both artists let the process guide the image, revealing the beauty of spontaneity and the ongoing conversation between the artist and the canvas.
