Erich Wichmann created this woodcut titled "Composition of Lines" in 1919. The artwork features stark, contrasting lines in black and white, creating a chaotic scene. The symbol of the cross is visible in the lower part of the composition. The cross is deeply embedded in human consciousness, dating back to ancient times. It predates Christianity, where it was associated with cosmic and natural symbols. Over time, especially with Christianity, the cross evolved to represent sacrifice, redemption, and spiritual transcendence, engaging viewers on a profound, subconscious level. Similar symbolic forms can be seen in ancient Egyptian art and even in the swirling patterns of tribal art from around the world. The cross continues to reappear in various forms across different eras, each time carrying echoes of its past, yet adapting to new cultural contexts. These artistic expressions highlight a non-linear progression, where symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings throughout history.
