Editor: So this diptych is titled “597”, and it's an acrylic on canvas by Luis Feito. At first glance, it strikes me as playful, with these contrasting shapes and the bold colors, though there's also something unsettling about the dark mass on the left. What's your read on it? Curator: Unsettling and playful… yes, I love that juxtaposition! To me, "597" feels like a glimpse into the artist's subconscious. These amorphous shapes become Rorschach blots, inviting us to project our own anxieties and joys onto them. The red circle in the first panel—does it feel like an eye to you? Or perhaps a wound? And what about that pink void in the second panel? It seems to both soothe and suffocate. Do you find yourself drawn more to one side than the other? Editor: That's interesting! The "eye/wound" really reframes my thinking of it. I’m immediately drawn to the left side, it’s easier to look at. Curator: The white background almost suggests a clinical space, no? Perhaps Feito is inviting us to dissect not just the painting, but ourselves. He lived through turbulent times in Spain, so maybe it’s all tied in to his anxieties in an unstable world. I wonder if this feeling of unrest might be intended through those shapes… what do you think? Editor: It didn't occur to me that that the diptych's colors and shapes may carry symbolic meaning and also personal anxiety! Curator: And that's the magic of abstract art, isn't it? We each bring our own baggage to the viewing experience, transforming the canvas into a mirror reflecting our innermost selves. Thanks for making me think in new directions too!
