Curatorial notes

This woodcut, Allegory of the Eucharist, presents us with potent symbols of Christian faith. Here, we see Christ on the cross, blood flowing into a chalice, and God the Father looking down upon this scene. Notice how the cross, typically a symbol of suffering and death, is here transformed into a vessel of life-giving blood. This imagery echoes ancient sacrificial rites, where blood was seen as a potent symbol of renewal. Think of the Minoan bull sacrifices or even earlier agricultural rituals; the shedding of blood fertilizes the earth, ensuring the continuation of life. The chalice, catching Christ's blood, also reminds us of the Holy Grail, a vessel of divine power, and of the Eucharist itself, a symbolic consumption of Christ’s sacrifice. This image evokes a complex emotional response, a blend of sorrow and hope, fear and redemption. It is a powerful reminder of humanity’s enduring fascination with sacrifice, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life and death.
