Curatorial notes

This is Luigi Pellegrino Scaramuccia’s chalk drawing, "Portret van een lezende geestelijke," or, "Portrait of a Reading Cleric." Scaramuccia, born in Rome, spent his career painting in Bologna and other cities of northern Italy, a region central to the Catholic Church. Here, we see a cleric engrossed in his reading. His eyes are closed as his finger touches his face in contemplation. Although the details of his clothes are minimal, we can observe a certain softness in the rendering of the fabric. There's also a gentle quality in the cleric's face. As viewers, we are invited into a moment of interiority that transcends the cleric's official role. This intimate portrayal subtly complicates traditional representations of religious figures. The artist captures a sense of personal reflection, suggesting that even within the structure of religious life, there is space for individual thought.
