This print, made in 1689 by an anonymous Dutch artist, is made from ink on paper through etching or engraving. These processes rely on the repetitive application of manual labor. Lines are incised into a metal plate, and then transferred onto paper in multiple editions. The resulting images are like journalistic photographs, widely distributed and culturally significant. Here, we see an allegorical depiction of Louis XIV and James II's joint struggle. The stark contrast created by the linear quality of the print, heightens the drama, while the caricature-like figures evoke a sense of unease and social commentary. Beyond the immediately visible narrative, the labor intensive process of printmaking gives it further depth, making it all the more vital as a form of political commentary. The artist isn’t just creating an image, but engaging in a form of cultural production that challenges the traditional boundaries of art.
