Curatorial notes

Philips Huygens created this drawing called ‘Gezicht op Breda’ using pen and brown ink. Huygens lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of immense cultural and economic flourishing for the Netherlands. At this time the Dutch Republic was taking center stage in global trade, science, and the arts. Here, in this delicate drawing, we are invited to reflect on the relationship between landscape and identity. Huygens shows us the architecture of Breda with the Grote Kerk towering above all else. Note how the buildings and nature blend together, suggesting a harmony between human construction and the natural world. This resonates with a growing sense of Dutch identity rooted in their connection to the land. Huygens, who died at a young age, leaves us with an enduring image of place and belonging. This drawing becomes more than just a landscape; it serves as a mirror reflecting the Dutch society finding its place in the world.
