Editor: So, this is “Vrouw afkomstig van Malta”, or “Woman from Malta,” an engraving made after 1567 by an anonymous artist. There's a serene quality to it, almost a detached observation of this woman. How would you interpret this work? Curator: The real question is: does she interpret us, as viewers? She occupies this interesting in-between space—between a symbol of the 'exotic' Maltese woman and simply, just, a woman. The drapery and detail of the engraving feel very formal and classical, almost Roman, which in turn can tell us something of how northern European engravers viewed the people of the Mediterranean. But then you’re reminded that someone, somewhere, sat for this. Maybe against their will? Editor: I see what you mean. The texture of the clothing contrasts so sharply with her relatively smooth face. What statement do you think this contrast is making? Curator: Perhaps that this is an outsider's portrait, capturing clothing first, identity second? I wonder about the performative aspect of clothing in this era - what it meant to be perceived a certain way because of the fabric one wore. Consider this image as an early form of cultural documentation... somewhat clunky, quite imperfect, maybe a touch exploitative, yet also laced with wonder, and, dare I say, a genuine artistic desire to document the diversity of our species. Editor: I never considered it that way! I suppose looking closer, her gaze seems less serene and more... resigned. Food for thought. Curator: Absolutely. It always shifts, doesn't it, the more you look? The beauty and curse of art.
