These three clock-hooks, or Horlogehaken as they were known, were created by an anonymous artist. This print, which now resides at the Rijksmuseum, offers us a glimpse into a world where even the most utilitarian objects were seen as opportunities for artistic expression. Considered within the broader context of decorative arts, these designs reflect the intricate and often ornate styles favored during their time. These designs would have been crafted in metal, and would have been used to hang time-keeping devices. They're adorned with elaborate carvings, flowing lines, and classical motifs. These weren't just functional items, they reflected the owner’s status and taste. The hooks embody luxury and sophistication, which only wealthier classes could obtain. The absence of a known artist actually invites us to reflect on the countless artisans whose labor and skill shaped the material culture of the past, but whose names have been lost to history. What can be preserved? What stories and values remain?
