This untitled work is a drawing by Alevtyna Kakhidze, an artist born in Ukraine in 1973. In this drawing, Kakhidze offers us symbols of material culture and personal reflection. The items on the left, including what looks to be a crown, a unicorn pendant, and a price tag, speak to value, aspiration, and perhaps even a critique of consumerism. On the right, we see a dark shape, a void, with text in what appears to be Russian, perhaps alluding to a future of strawberries from Andrei's farm. Kakhidze uses her drawings to weave together personal narratives with broader social and political commentary. Her work often explores themes of identity and belonging. The juxtaposition of objects with text invites us to consider the relationship between material desires and the more grounded, perhaps simpler, pleasures of life. Ultimately, Kakhidze prompts us to reflect on what we truly value and how those values shape our sense of self and community.
