Clementine Hunter made this painting, Washing Day, in 1971. It's full of everyday scenes and the colours are so vibrant. I can imagine Hunter standing in front of the canvas, brush in hand, thinking about wash day and the repetitive but essential nature of the task. It's amazing to see the figures rendered so simply, yet they convey so much about labor, community, and the essence of life. The clothes hanging on the line are bold, blocks of colour—red, white and blue. Look at the big black pot of boiling water and how it dominates the centre of the frame. It’s like the artist is saying, pay attention to the work that sustains us. Notice how the white steam rising contrasts against the darkness of the pot. Hunter’s paintings remind us of the power of art to tell stories and honour everyday experiences. She makes me want to grab a brush and dive into the world of colour, memory, and imagination. We’re all in conversation through paint!
