This bronze medal was created in 1869 by P Hart to commemorate the Land- en Tuinbouwkundige tentoonstelling, or agricultural and horticultural exhibition, in Luxembourg. At first glance, the medal presents a study in contrasts. The obverse side features the relief profiles of royalty, meticulously rendered with attention to the texture of hair and beard. The reverse is dominated by text, arranged in concentric circles and horizontal lines, creating a structured, almost geometric pattern. The medal is thus divided between the figurative and the textual, the personal and the institutional. The choice of bronze, with its earthy tone, subtly connects the medal to the agricultural theme it celebrates. The circular form itself suggests unity and completion, yet the distinct separation of image and text introduces a sense of duality. The medal functions not just as a commemorative object but as a symbolic representation of the interplay between power, industry, and representation.
