This jug, by John Tarantino, is made from stoneware. Stoneware is a dense, non-porous pottery fired at high temperatures, and is a humble material, typically associated with functional objects rather than fine art. Its hefty form, with two handles and a narrow neck, is clearly designed for utility, likely to hold wine, cider, or vinegar. The decoration, incised with stylized birds and foliage, adds a touch of folk art charm. This jug's earthy brown glaze and cobalt blue embellishments speak to its origins in the everyday lives of rural communities. The creation of such a piece would involve considerable physical labor, from digging and preparing the clay, to shaping it on a wheel or with molds, to firing it in a kiln. The hand-crafted nature of the jug is evident in its slight irregularities and the unique character of its decoration. In celebrating the beauty and functionality of this simple vessel, we recognize the value of skilled craftsmanship.
