Gerardus Johannes Bos made this print, "Jan van Speijk op het punt de lont in het ruim te gooien," in 1831. It depicts a dramatic moment of self-sacrifice that resonated deeply with Dutch national identity in the 19th century. The image portrays Jan van Speijk, a Dutch naval officer, about to detonate his ship rather than surrender it to Belgian revolutionaries. Bos’ print offers a window into the turbulent period of the Belgian Revolution, when the Netherlands was struggling to maintain control over its southern territories. The heroic depiction of van Speijk speaks to the conservative, nationalist sentiments prevalent in the Netherlands at the time, during the reign of King William I. Historical documents, newspapers, and popular literature from the period can provide further insight into the cult of personality that surrounded van Speijk and the political uses to which his image was put. The print also prompts us to consider how museums and other institutions have shaped the narrative around this event.
