Editor: This intriguing work by Paul Coldwell features an open book. It's undated and untitled, but it's part of the Tate collection. I'm struck by how the stark monochrome gives it a sort of ghostly, ephemeral quality. What social narratives do you see within this piece? Curator: The open book, particularly rendered with such a weightless quality, makes me think about the accessibility, or inaccessibility, of knowledge. Who has the right to write, whose stories are told, and who gets to read them? The blank pages invite projection, but also critique the absence of certain voices. Consider the museum itself, what stories does it prioritize? Editor: That's a great point. It makes me think about the politics inherent in even the most seemingly neutral presentation of information. Curator: Exactly. And Coldwell's choice of such a commonplace object, the book, reframes how we might consider these power dynamics. Editor: Thanks, I'll definitely look at other pieces in the collection differently now.
