Sa Nogueira created this abstract serigraph, or screen print, in 1969. The process involves pressing ink through a stenciled screen. It's an inherently graphic technique, best suited for flat planes of color and bold contrasts, and that’s certainly what we see here. Nogueira was part of a generation of artists who enthusiastically embraced printmaking. They saw the possibilities inherent in this ‘democratic’ medium, a means of multiplying images and reaching a wide audience. Just look at the graphic punch delivered by the simple shapes and bold color palette: red, yellow, black, white. It’s a design language rooted in early modernism, but still punchy and fresh today. Printmaking is often overlooked in favor of unique works like paintings or sculptures. But in reality it takes a huge amount of skill, careful planning, and registration to achieve a successful print. Next time you see one, ask yourself: what work went into this work?
