Curatorial notes

Harmen ter Borch created this drawing, "Man met stok, naar links" using pen in grey ink. Notice the figure dominating the composition, a man with a stick, rendered with an emphasis on line and form. The grayscale palette strips away the distraction of colour. Instead, we are directed towards the shape and form of the figure and its stark contrast against the blank space of the paper. Ter Borch’s swift, assured strokes define not just the man's physical form, but also his stance and movement, with the stick acting as an extension of his gesture. Shadows are hinted at with washes of grey, grounding the figure and giving depth to the otherwise sparse setting. The composition, therefore, isn't merely a depiction but an active construction of space through tonal relationships. This approach aligns with a structuralist view, where the drawing's meaning is created through the interaction of its components—line, tone, and form—rather than any narrative it might suggest. It is in this interplay of elements that the essence of Ter Borch’s work resides.
