Gezicht op het strand van Marina Grande te Sorrento
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Norbert van den Berg captured this view of Marina Grande in Sorrento, and we immediately notice the boats strewn across the beach. These vessels, symbols of journeys and transitions, echo ancient myths of sea voyages, like that of Odysseus. The boat as a symbol carries with it a deep psychological resonance, representing not just physical travel, but also the journey of life itself. It is a motif found across cultures, from Egyptian funerary boats ensuring passage to the afterlife, to Viking longships carrying warriors to Valhalla. This persistent imagery taps into our collective unconscious, evoking themes of exploration, uncertainty, and the search for new horizons. Here, the numerous boats clustered together might suggest a community bound by the sea, their fates intertwined with the tides. Perhaps, they also embody the hope for a new beginning, the potential for adventure and discovery that has captivated humanity since time immemorial. The symbol resurfaces, reminding us of our shared yearning for progress and understanding.
